The book examines in detail underwater weapons, communications and navigation technologies, undersea warfare tactics, as well as the rationale for the existence of submarine forces in the navies of various countries.
The book’s historical text is further augmented by thought-provoking sidebars on such subjects as ballistic missile warheads; the story of the development of the Polaris missile, America’s first submarine-launched ballistic missile; homing torpedoes; and the Seawolf, America’s super submarine of the future. Of special note are two additional sidebars, one exploring American submarine life in World War II, while another recounts the true story of a successful wartime American submarine patrol in the Pacific. In these sidebars, as throughout the text of the entire book, readers will benefit from the knowledge and experience, as well as the insightful writing, of the author - himself a former submariner and a decorated veteran of several World War II submarine combat patrols.
The heart of Undersea Warriors: Submarines of the World is comprised of illustrated profiles of currently active submarines operated and/or built by the United States, the Soviet Union, Great Britain, France, Germany, Sweden, Italy, and other nations.
For each nation you’ll find an appraisal of its philosophy of submarine strategy, its experience in submarine operations, and its perceived future plans.
Before each appraisal there is an end-of-1990 submarine inventory listing the submarines by functional groups. The submarine classes for each nation are then profiled to show their respective attributes and specifications; operational roles; antecedents; structural, technical, and weapons characteristics; a comparison with similar classes of other nations; and future plans for the class, if known.
Also noted is the national history of grants or export sales to other nations of any of its submarines.
In the appraisals of U.S. submarines, for example, you’ll find out why the Oh/o-class of strategic missile submarines are the most powerful weapons systems ever built. Or how the attack submarines of the Los Angeles class are the quietest nuclear submarines in existence and, as such, are the world’s most capable hunter-killers. The chapter on the Soviet Union provides uniquely insightful portraits of the giant Typhoon-class strategic missile submarines, the oddly configured but deadly De/ta-class strategic missile submarines, and the super-fast, deep-diving Alfa attack submarines.
