The time is ripe for the 5th International Maritime Defense Show (IMDS). Much has changed over eight years that have passed since the first forum. The Russian Navy is beginning to revive. Its ships travel through the oceans of the world, they are involved in numerous exercises including those with the participation of NATO and other countries. Although slowly, but the Navy is being replenished with new ships, submarines, and support vessels. However, it is not for nothing do they say: "Russians harness the horse slowly, but ride fast!".
The recent events confirm this wisdom. SSBN Yuri Dolgoruky the type boat of Russia’s Project Borei class, has reached the final stages of official tests while the first follow-on ship in this class, the Alexander Nevsky, is being prepared for sea trials. The first new-generation Project 885 attack nuclear-powered submarine Severodvinsk is going to sea. The corvette Soobrazitelny, the first follow-on ship of the Steregushchy class, the debut of which took place at IMDS 2007, has already tasted the Baltic wave. The type Project 20350 frigate bearing the name Admiral Gorshkov, an outstanding naval commander and builder of the national Navy, is undergoing fitting-out afloat.
It’s no secret that export orders have largely helped the national shipbuilding industry survive in the post-Soviet period. They still account for a major share of the Russian shipbuilding industry’s products. There is good news in this sphere as well. In late May, the second Gepard-3.9-class frigate built by the Zelenodolsk Plant named after A.M. Gorky headed for Vietnam. The frigate Teg built for the Indian Navy by the Kaliningrad-based Yantar Shipyard has just begun testing. Sevmash is conducting the mooring tests of the aircraft carrier Vikramaditya also destined for the Indian Navy. The Admiralty Shipyards is assembling a large series of nonnuclear-powered submarines for foreign customers, while the Sredne-Nevsky Shipyard is building missile boats for foreign customers.
Undoubtedly, the St. Petersburg-based IMDS, which always hospitably opens its doors to the participants and guests of this feast of naval equipment, plays an important role in promotinf Russian naval equipment abroad.
