This is a brief outline of the war history of a 24-year-old battleship, salvaged from the wreckage of Pearl Harbor. She was repaired and improved, to be damaged in action and repaired again and again, but each time coming back a better ship than before. Into her complex machinery and armament is woven the labor and skill of men and women from many walks of life, and at the end of hostilities more than 70 per cent of the men who manned her had been, at the beginning of the war, on farms, in schools, factories or professions. Yet, never was she so deadly an instrument of war as on the day peace was declared. Her record reflects the courage, determination, and resourcefulness of the American people.
