This volume is reproduced from the 1946/47 edition of Jane’s Fighting Ships, which was the first wholly uncensored issue of this famous book to appear following the opening of hostilities in 1939. It has been specially reformatted and the amendments and late additions to the original volume have been incorporated into the text at the appropriate place. By the time the 1946/7 edition was published, the warships of the defeated nations had either perished or had been appropriated by the victors; so for this special edition new sections for the Axis navies have been compiled from previous editions in order to cover, as far as possible, the fighting ships of those fleets at their zenith. No single edition of Jane’s carried pictures and information of all of the ships now represented. The reader will find that entries for a few Axis ships handed over to the Allies after the war have been duplicated, the original entry being in the German or Japanese section, with a later entry within the section devoted to the navy to which the ship was transferred. It should also be remembered that the information in this volume represents what was known at the time, and therefore follows the contemporary official reports, some of which have subsequently been corrected as the full story of the Second World War has been told. Indeed, as with modern defence publications, the editor was constrained to record informed speculation regarding new construction that was still secret. However, this volume does represent the best compendium of information on the navies of the world at the time of first publication.
Every effort has been made to obtain and reproduce the photographs to the highest possible standard but unfortunately much of the original material is no longer available. Some pictures have therefore been reproduced from previously printed material which has deteriorated with time. It was considered more important to include those references rather than have the written details appearing without illustration.
