In 2018, IMO celebrates its seventieth anniversary. The theme for this anniversary year is "Our Heritage -Better Shipping for a Better Future". We look both at the accomplishments of the IMO in the past 70 years and also to what lies ahead; an opportunity to reflect and showcase how IMO has adapted over the years as a crucial player in the global supply chain, the key to a sustainable future for the world's peoples. In 2017, the Legal Committee of IMO also celebrated an anniversary: 50 years. Since 1967, the Legal Committee has provided the machinery for cooperation among Governments to consider legal matters within the scope of the Organization. The grounding of the tanker Torrey Canyon on 18 March 1967 raised so many legal questions and issues that, only two months later, the IMO Council decided to establish an ad hoc Legal Committee, which met for the first time in June 1967.
