Classification Society1 (Class) rules incorporate many of the requirements intended to prevent the onset of a fire onboard ships at sea. However, even with all the preventive measures taken, shipboard fires still occur with alarming frequency. Therefore, the proper design, installation, and operation of the vessel’s firefighting systems are critical to the safety of a vessel and the personnel onboard. Since firefighting systems are so critical, the designs and arrangements of such systems should be carefully evaluated for compliance with Class requirements by the designer and Class engineering assessment staffs. This book has been developed to assist in a better understanding of the Class requirements for such systems. It is intended to provide a general overview of the generic Class requirements that should be considered during technical plan review activities. This book also discusses the basic scientific fundamentals of fire, as appropriate for a proper understanding and application of Class requirements. Accordingly, this book should be considered as general guidance only and the technical reviews of firefighting systems should verify compliance with all Class rules applicable to the specific vessel involved.
