Maritime security within the Indo-Asia-Pacific region is a strategic intersection of both shared and competing interests for China, India, and the United States. The growing tensions in the East and South China seas reflect the competing interests, but the economic power shift to Asia in a global economic environment means that the three powers necessarily have shared interest in safe transit, unfettered trade, and peaceful interaction of the navies of the region. China, India and the United States are not the only players in maritime security issues in the region, and the recent International Court of Justice rulings on long-standing disputes between Colombia and Nicaragua and between Chile and Peru illustrate the extent of economic and security cooperation and competition.
