Earth is shaped like a big ball, or sphere. If you draw a line around its middle, the top half is the northern hemisphere and the bottom half is the southern hemisphere.
The North Pole sits right at the top of the world. The icy area around it is known as the Arctic. Most of the Arctic is a huge sheet of frozen sea, with pieces of land around the edges.
