The 1970s was a decade when the quest to understand petroleum drilling and production operations offshore acquired a new impetus. It was a time when global oil production surged on the heels of a rapidly growing world economy. India joined the bandwagon of offshore oil producing nations in 1974 following a momentous discovery of Bombay High. While oil producing nations rejoiced at the acquisition of captive resources, the lack of special techniques and equipment loomed onerously. The problem was further exacerbated by a severe dearth of skilled manpower, an indispensable component for ensuring efficient execution of projects. Nations, however, geared up to the needs of the hour and made suitable investments in building infrastructure while setting directives for improving manpower competency. Workers, directly or indirectly related to the petroleum sector, engineers and young enthusiasts were driven both by need and curiosity to learn about offshore petroleum operations. Hence, the stage for further inquiry and research in this new field (offshore operations) was set.
The book is primarily addressed to undergraduate and graduate students of petroleum engineering, though beginners in the petroleum industry can benefit from its perusal, too. Overall, the book is intended to serve as a ‘ready reference’ on E & P operations for practitioners and academics alike.
