As usual with any technical book, many people have provided expertise on specific materials and projects, as well as ideas and thoughts. These folks deserve many thanks for their help, advice, and patience. One constant source of aid and advice is my wife Mary who patiently edited my disorganized paragraphs and made sure that the words meant exactly what they said. She also tolerated fiberglass parts, solvents, boats, paints, and other gear on the deck, the driveway, the garage, and wherever else I was working at the time. My sons, David and Michael, made a big contribution by finding boat projects for me to help with no matter how overloaded I was with other work! Some of the boats shown in these pictures belong to them.
Finally, thanks to the many folks who have helped me judge the NMMA’s Innovation Awards and the METS DAME awards in Holland over the years. Their questions and answers have improved this book immeasurably. In addition, seeing new products, fabrics, and fiberglass techniques, especially at the IBEX show where they are often on display, has helped formulate some of the background to this book.
Before you can begin repairing or rebuilding a fiberglass boat, you need to understand how it is put together. Such knowledge will also tell you when a contemplated repair job is worth the time and money, and when it is likely to be so difficult or costly that you`d be better served to give up on the boat.
