1. Application
The Drum Sextant is used, together with other nautical instruments, for astronomical position finding on sea. Measurement of the angle between a fixed and a movable flat mirror enables determination of the dip distances of stars.
Near the cost the position of the ship can also be determined by measuring the horizontal angles (intersecting according to fixed points of known position).
