Whether you are the skipper of a sailing yacht or a motorboat, you will need a wide knowledge to keep both yourself and your crew safe at sea. You will need skills in seamanship, navigation, communication systems, meteorology and first aid as well as some understanding of engines. Your marine diesel is a rather complex installation and you will need some knowledge of electrical wiring, electronics and the motor itself. The following pages should help you to identify faults in the event of engine failure. Then you can ask yourself: Can I repair it onboard or do I have to ask for outside help?
As well as referring to this book, it is also important for you to familiarise yourself with the manual for your engine. Read it very carefully, using any photos and diagrams supplied to help you to identify the key components.
The diagram (right) will help you to do this - it is a typical diesel engine which may vary a bit from yours but the aim is to identify the main components that you need to know about. Even if you usually leave the maintenance to your service engineer, every boat owner should have a broad working knowledge of their engine.
Take some time to look at each component and system such as the raw water cooling: water intake and sea cock, water filter, water pump, heat exchanger.
