The Shell Channel Pilot is dedicated to the memory of Captain John Coote RN, second editor/compiler of the pilot, and a great man of the sea. The English Channel is one of the world’s finest yacht cruising grounds. It has varying coastal topography, from the granite shores of Brittany to the Solent harbour mud flats and the chalk cliffs of Sussex. Resorts, cities, naval bases and great commercial ports line its waters, but it also offers islands and quiet anchorages. For British or French sailors there is the added spice of foreign shores anything from a few hours to a day away, while for visitors from further afield two great nations are here to be explored by yacht, which, as all cruising people know, is the best way to discover any country.
