The Netherlands is a wonderful country for family sailing. It also very suitable for those who like to potter, and for those who have limited holiday time and prefer not to risk being gale bound for much of it. At the same time I know a number of experienced cruising people, with more time available, who spend five months there every year.
There is a well-established standard British tour, which comprises visits to Middelburg, Veere, Goes, Zierikzee and Willemstad. These places can be very crowded during the Dutch school holiday season and this sometimes deters sailors from a return visit. There is so much more!
This new pilot guide is unprecedented in that it covers the whole of the inland cruising area rather than just the fixed mast routes. I hope it will encourage more sailors to discover for themselves how satisfying an exploration of the lakes, rivers and canals can be. There is a particular affinity between the Dutch people and the British which ensures a warm welcome and, apart from a very few remote places, there is no language barrier.
