This 19th edition of East Coast Rivers has a new publisher, Wiley Nautical. The book is larger, returning to its former A4 format, and contains more pages than previous editions. Coverage has been extended to include Ramsgate, which strictly speaking is not on the East Coast. However, as it is a strategic port of call on a Thames Estuary crossing whether you are sailing to or from The Channel, France or Belgium, I hope it will be a useful additional chapter.
Also new this time is my potted history of the book East Coast Rivers and its connection with my family, from its beginnings in 1956. The archive photographs used to illustrate this section give a flavour of the way things were 50 years ago, before the days of glassfibre boats and marinas.
Text and charts in all other chapters have been thoroughly updated and numerous new photographs have been incorporated, including aerial views. The extra pages have allowed me to weave a thread of local maritime history into the text, drawn from tales of leisure yachting and trading under sail. I have dipped into old sailing books, now mostly out of print, to find relevant extracts and snippets from yachting and cruising writers such as the Wyllies, Archie White,
James Wentworth Day, Francis В Cooke, Hervey Benham, Maurice Griffiths, to name but a few.
On the East Coast the historic link with plough and sail is still much in evidence - hence my frequent references to barges, bawleys, smacks, sprits and sprats, and wharves at the top of creeks that are 'no more than enlarged drainage ditches', to quote Hervey Benham.
As ever, essential up-to-date information for the yachtsman is contained in these pages, and we have added detail and telephone numbers for pubs and restaurants, especially those popular ones where you may need to book a table. Shoreside walks and relevant OS maps, bird and nature reserves, museums or sites with maritime connections are also listed.
Since publication of the previous edition, at Brightlingsea a conspicuous new apartment development has been built on the site of the former James and Stone shipyard. On the quay at Mistley a large part of the old makings buildings has been converted into luxury flats.
At Whitstable, the plans for regenerating the South Quay include a supermarket and holiday flats; at Faversham, Standard Quay continues to come under intense pressure from property speculators to close;
